The first time the computer told Maya Bennett something it could not possibly know, she laughed.
It was not a happy laugh. It was the short, unbelieving sound people made when reality slipped half an inch sideways and they needed to pretend it had not.
Maya sat at the small dining table in her apartment with one sock on, one sock off, a mug of coffee gone cold beside the laptop, and three cardboard boxes of old papers spread across the floor. She had spent most of the evening feeding dates, names, account statements, scanned letters, and decades-old records into the private organizing program she had nicknamed Vee because calling it VERITY every time made her feel like she was talking to a government agency.
