The note on Jimmy Carter's Corvette contained three words: WE KNOW SEVEN. By the time he found it, he would have spent an entire shift convincing himself that the seven diamonds were safe. The trouble began with his keys.
Thomas heard them before he saw Jimmy, clinking against his hip as he came through the postal plant like somebody had handed him the building. He had always carried too many keys. Half probably opened doors that no longer existed; the rest, Thomas suspected, were there because Jimmy liked the sound.
