Elena had one foot out of her husband's car when the man she had once planned to marry called her name.
She stopped with her hand against the door. Across the narrow lane, Daniel stood beside a stack of timber, a work shirt open at his throat and sawdust caught along his sleeves. For a second, she saw the young man whose absence at a railway station had changed the course of her life. Then the years returned. There was gray beginning at his temples, a steadiness in his shoulders, and a house behind him that had never belonged in her memories of this place.
