The first man fell from the helicopter while Shun was still watching her uncle’s hand on the open door. Zhou had ordered the pilot to remain close to the ship. Everyone on deck could see the aircraft moving through the gray morning above the water. They had watched Zhou’s men drag Liang aboard without his prosthetic leg. They had heard her uncle ask the prisoner whether he could swim. If a body came down, they expected to know whose it was. The man struck the sea beyond the wake and vanished.
