Station Blues

Jimmy starts the morning threatening to fire a man who is at urgent care. Thomas, Jose, and the other workers have plenty to say about it. Gossip, public arguments, missing packages, and the pressure of everyday work turn the station into a place where the jokes carry real consequences.

Inside the story

A reading sample

Jimmy Mercer threatened to fire a man who wasn’t even in the building.

“When Marcus gets here, tell him don’t bother taking his coat off.”

Jimmy stood beside the time clock with his keys clenched in one hand and a breakfast sandwich in the other. He had not swallowed before making the announcement. A fleck of egg landed on his tie. “I’m tired of playing games with people.”

Thomas stopped tying his shoe. Across the workroom, conversations died unevenly. Renee kept sorting until she heard Marcus’s name a second time. Jose lowered his coffee. Brenda Carter closed the folder she had been carrying toward the office and turned around.
