Inside the story

A reading sample

Twelve hours earlier, the plant looked like any other Monday-morning circus. Everyone rushed toward the time clock because they had one click left before they were late. The instant they punched in, half of them slowed down like the building had filled with syrup. Supervisors barked at the people who had arrived on time, then smiled and offered kind words to the late ones moving like turtles. That was the post office: hurry up to get there, then take your time doing everything else.

A yellow sticky note waited on my timecard: COME SEE ME. It was from the one and only Mr. Rome, which meant my morning had officially gone to hell.
