Bibiana: The Price of Control

Inside the story

A reading sample

Bibiana knew something was wrong when Monica asked whether saving one sister had been enough for everybody.

Until then, the evening at Alex’s house had sounded almost ordinary.

Rain tapped the windows overlooking the Maine coast. Roger had brought bread from a bakery Sam liked, and Alex was arguing that buying dinner ingredients counted as cooking. Levi stood near the kitchen island with his sleeves rolled up, washing the same glass twice. Bibiana had noticed him doing it, just as she had noticed Monica leave her coat on after everyone else had settled in. Now the room went quiet around a plate of food nobody had touched.
